Ronan Chris Murphy is a renowned producer, engineer, and mixer based in Los Angeles. When I worked in L.A., I was fortunate to visit his Veneto West studio, on the westside, not far from the ocean, on several occasions, including attending one of Ronan’s fantastic mastering workshops.
Aside from his traditional studio pursuits, Ronan is a fixture on the internet, offering sage advice to veterans and neophytes alike on Ronan’s Recording Show, and he operates a the popular audio-production school Recording Bootcamp, which offers courses on-line, in Los Angeles, and in northern Italy at a private, boutique studio housed in the early 17th-century Villa Prosdocimi, outside of Venice.

Ronan Chris Murphy works around the globe in every conceivable music-production context. Over the past 20 years he has amassed a discography spanning several hundred albums, including work with international pop stars and more than a few virtuosos.
As a producer, engineer, and mixer, Ronan has worked with King Crimson (on several albums), Steve Morse (of The Dixie Dreggs and Deep Purple), Terry Bozzio (Zappa, Missing Persons), Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, Pink Floyd), Martin Sexton, Jamie Walters, Ulver, The California Guitar Trio, Chucho Valdes y Groupo Irakere, Pete Teo, Joan LaBarbara (Philip Glass Ensemble, Steve Reich), and Nels Cline (Wilco)—as well as various projects featuring members of Tool, Ministry, Weezer, Dishwalla, and Yes.
Before diving into production and mixing Ronan spent several years as a musician playing in bands in the D.C. hardcore scene that influenced the the rise of grunge, sharing the stage with bands such as Dinosaur Jr., All, The Flaming lips, Gwar, and the Rollins Band. In an odd footnote in rock history, his first band—an early D.C. punk band called Freakbaby—was also Dave Grohl’s first band, following Ronan’s departure from the group.
Here Ronan speaks to Matt Boudreau from his studio in the mountains, conversing about his long career in production, his recording workshops, internet trolls, and recording Terry Bozzio.
