Here at the studio we’re huge fans of the work of Dave Cobb—the Grammy–winning, Nashville-based producer most well-known for stewarding releases from Jason Isbell, Shooter Jennings, Sturgil Simpson, and Chris Stapleton.

Cobb has worked more recently with singer-songwriter Anderson East (whom he recorded at the legendary FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama) and Lake Street Dive—also favorites around the shop.

In 2015, after winning Grammy awards for the production of Chris Stapleton’s Traveller and Jason Isbell’s Something More Than Free (the follow up to 2013’s Southeastern, the record which arguably “broke” both Isbell and Cobb on the national scene), Cobb moved his operation to the legendary RCA Studio A, which was opened by Chet Atkins in 1965. He has since produced projects there for Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown, and a ton of other top-billing acts.

It’s no suprise that Cobb cites Jimmy Miller (of the Stones’ Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street), Glyn Johns, Brendan O’Brien, and Daptone’s Gabriel Roth as primary influences.

Cobb’s aesthetic choices in many ways mirror our own ethos here at Master Sound—the primacy of a the vocal in the song’s arrangement and an emphasis on recording acoustic instruments with superior fidelity.

We’re also fans of the Rig Rundown series from Premier Guitar.  (We are incorrigible gearheads, of course.) So for your hump-day diversion, we offer the PG video documenting Cobb’s arsenal of vintage gear. Enjoy.
