Rob Ulsh

Robert Ulsh began playing keyboards and guitar at an early age, singing and performing in various rock and pop groups at western New York clubs, colleges, and regional events. He taught guitar as a staff instructor while in college and directed Columbia International University’s folk-rock ensemble, representing the school on repeated summer tours. Always fascinated with the technical and electronic elements of music production, he set up his first 8-track studio in 1979.

Since the early 1980s, Rob and Master Sound have worked with artists and producers operating at the highest levels of the recording industry, including Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, Pharrell Williams, Counting Crows, Britney Spears, Prince, Missy Elliott, Teddy Riley, Glen Campbell, Debby Boone, Crystal Gayle, Eddie Rabbitt, Phil Keaggy, Greg Nelson, Michael Bivens, Brent Havens, LL Cool J, Ludacris, and many local and regional artists.

With more than 30 years of studio experience, Rob is conversant in the nuances of myriad genres, from rock, pop, acoustic, and alternative, to orchestral, country, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, folk, and gospel. His vocal recordings have drawn national acclaim, his interpretation of pitch, phrasing, timing, and feel setting him apart from other engineers and garnering him a reputation as one of the region’s top vocal producers.

Rob brings to every project not merely inimitable technical know-how but also the passion and discernment of a lifelong musician. As a songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist, Rob seeks always to balance the technical and the aesthetic, to ensure that the technology of the studio serves the song—the composition, arrangement, and performance—and not the other way around.

“I’ve known Rob Ulsh for the better part of 20 years and in that time worked on more than a dozen recording projects of varying size and scope. He is the consummate professional when it comes to engineering a recording project: the best ears of any engineer I’ve ever worked with, is always friendly to and respectful of the client, works fast but misses nothing, and has all of the high-end gear required to see any project from inception to completion. The studio space itself is also world-class. There is not another engineer in the area with his breadth of experience, from recording a symphony, working on film scores, recording solo guitar or a five piece rock band, or engineering a project for a jazz quartet. And his mastering is second to none. I can’t imagine another studio environment in which to record any project.”
